Baron Metus

Baron Metus was the first vampire slain by the illustrious Dr. Van Richten. Metus purchased Van Richten's son, Erasmus, from the vistani clan that kidnapped him, and attempted to turn him into an eternal vampire companion. But Rudolph put his son to rest before the transformation was complete, causing Metus to kill Rudolph's beloved wife in revenge. When Dr. Van Richten finally tracked down and slew the monster, he was still inexperienced, fueled mostly by rage and despair, and so something went wrong. Two things, to be precise.

Firstly, unbeknownst to the Doctor, Metus had taken a new companion, Cynthia DeGreives, and was in the process of tranforming her into a Vampire Bride. When Metus was slain, she was trapped between the worlds of the living and the undead, a Vorlog, cursed to forever seek out men who remind her of her lost love. Secondly, the Baron himself was not fully destroyed, but lingered in spirit form as a Crimson Mist. When Cynthia went to the vistani medium, Mistress Natasha, to seek Van Richten's new home, Metus let himself be channeled into Natasha, and set Cynthia on the right track to Mordent, before he inadvertantly drained the life out of the medium, in front of her young son, Ludovic.

While Cynthia did eventually reach Mordent, she never located Van Richten, as he was using an assumed name at the time, not wanting to be found. In time she was distracted by a nobleman whose voice was similar to that of Metus, and was lured away from her goal by the noble's courtship. The Mist of Metus chased Cynthia across the world for years, attempting to keep her focused on vengeance against Van Richten. Each surrogate Metus that Cynthia chose met a grisly death, either slain by Metus to put her back on the path of revenge, or killed by Cynthia herself in a blind rage when he did not match her memories of the Baron closely enough. After each death, she renewed her vow of revenge, but after each brief pursuit of Van Richten, she found another man to distract her from the quest. She grew to hate and fear the Mist, not knowing that it was in fact her beloved Metus, and assumed the vistani seer had summoned it to curse her. This mistaken notion inspired in her an intense hatred of the vistani.

Limited by his incorporeal state, Metus lost track of Cynthia in Barovia in the year 730. By the time he found her again, it was 735, and she had settled in Port-a-Lucine with Conrad. Once again, Metus struck, but Ludovic, Kerri, Leif, and Duffy were there to protect Conrad, and Metus's spirit was destroyed. A remnant of the Mist was drawn into Ludovic's mind by his spirit powers, and through the fractured memories contained in that remnant, Ludovic was able to learn much of Metus and Cynthia's relationship. With this knowledge, he found a locket that Metus had given her, with his portrait inside. From this portrait, the group saw the uncanny physical resemblence between Metus and Conrad, no doubt the reason why Cynthia took a liking to such an uncultured and humble man.
